What is hyaluronic acid used for, and how exactly does it work?

It is primarily a hydrating ingredient, and in fact acts like a sponge. Its function is to absorb water, and when combined with other ingredients, it also provides moisturizing benefits: in other words, it helps seal in that water and retain moisture.

The effect of this hydration on your skin depends on its molecular weight. Low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid penetrates down to the deepest layers. Its effect is less visible to the eye, but in return, it provides deep, long-lasting hydration. This is key to building the foundation of your Skin Longevity. Then there’s medium- and high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, which acts on the outermost layers of the skin and strengthens your protective barrier.
